Albufeira Tries To Boost Tourism Through New Technologies

"qr codes albufeira"New technology is being harnessed by the council in Albufeira in a bid to promote tourism within the local area.

A new project to promote tourism in Albueira has been launched with six symbols being placed around the local area within the calçada flooring to allow people to access useful tourist information by simply taking a picture of the symbol with their smartphone or tablet which will then lead them to a website with all the information they might need.

The project, known as QR Code @ Albufeira.pt  shows how the local council are embracing new technologies to improve service for visiting tourists to the area.

The QR codes can now be found in six different sites in Albufeira with some painted onto the tarmac in areas and others appearing in the paving stones but all easy to use with a smartphone or tablet.

Anyone looking for the QR codes in Albufeira can find them in the Largo Eng Duarte Pacheco, on Avenida da Liberdade, Avenida Sá Carneiro, Pau da Bandeira, at Praia da Oura ond on Avenida 25 de Abril in Olhos de Água.

Anyone using the QR code will be led to the Albufeira website where information can be found in Portuguese, English and Spanish about different aspects of the local area but with a firm focus on providing information to visitors and to promote tourism activities in Albufeira.

QR codes were first invented in 1994 in Japan and have since been used for many different functions with each being unique and having the ability to lead you to any source on the internet by simply capturing the image of the QR code on a smartphone or a tablet that is able to then connect to the internet.

Thinking of new and inventive ways to help tourists in the Algarve is something that is of great importance to the wider Algarve economy as the region has to now compete with more different resorts and destinations than ever before for tourism trade.

The mayor of Albufeira, José Carlos Rolo said: “This project is part of a wider strategy to promote tourist information, not only for residents in Portugal but also especially those who have come to visit us from other countries.

“With this simple gesture we are able to open up a vast amount of information to tourists in Albufeira and this form of technology has endless possibilities.”
