Algarve New Year’s Eve Celebrations Confirmed For Portimão

"algarve new year news"The Algarve will be welcoming in 2014 with a bang thanks to music, entertainment and fireworks promised for the final day of 2013 in Portimão.

Portimão has been known for many years as one of the premier spots to welcome in the New Year in the Algave, however with recent financial cut backs in the region and in Portugal as a whole there was no certainly that this year would see more of the same.  However it has now been confirmed that there will be fun to be had on New Yea’s Eve for everybody thanks to the local council putting on a huge show.

One of the most highly anticipated elements of New Year’s Eve in Portimão is always the exciting fireworks display, one that can usually be seen (when the weather is good) for miles along the coast of the Algarve.

At the stroke of midnight fireworks will be released from Praia da Rocha in Portimão with the cost of the display being sponsored by a private company.

While for many the fireworks are the best way to welcome in the New Year the council in Portimão are also keen to highlight that there are many other great things to do in the city over the festive peiod with lots of arts and entertainment for all of the family.

There are several exhibitions taking place around the city at various museums and gallerys while there is entertainment at the TEMPO theatre in the centre of Portimão.

The council have worked to make Portimão a destination for the entire New Year period and are encouraging visitors to make the most of the great Algarve weather at this time of year to even take time out for a simply stroll along the beach or through the streets of the city while there is even a concert on January 4 by the Lagos Orchestra with festive favourites being played.

A spokesman for the Portimão council was eager to point out that while every effort is being made to encourage people to come to Portimão for this time of the year that this has added no extra cost to the council who are in financial difficulties.

The spokesman said: “The entire programme has been developed with the help of sponsorship and represents no cost to the municipality.”

There are also several other towns and cities in the Algarve putting on New Year’s Eve displays and fireworks show including the very popular entertainment and fireworks in Albufeira and Monte Gordo and some stunning fireworks over the cliffs in Vale do Lobo.

It is free to watch the firework displays to welcome in New Year in the Algarve and makes for a very exciting and dramatic way to close 2013 and welcome in 2014 with a bang!
