Algarve Tourist Boats Investigated By Police

"algarve boat trips"An operation by the Portuguese police in conjunction with the Portuguese Navy has seen 25 different boats offering tourist trips along the coast being investigated for irregularities.

The operation saw the police and navy investigating various boats operating from the areas of Lagos, Portimão and Albufeira to check different aspects including making sure that there were adequate safety devices, correct documentation for the boats and that the boats were not over crowded.

A spokesman from the Portimão and Lagos port told the Portuguese news agency that in total five boats had problems with their documentations, six were found not to comply with the required amount of safety devices and another was found to be overcrowded.

Boat trips are a popular past time for many people coming to the Algarve on holiday and the summer season of July and August sees the largest number of boats taking to the seas offering everything from fishing trips to dolphin watching, cave tours and sunset boat parties.

All boats should have enough floatation devices for those on board and safety instructions should be given to passengers on board.

The boats that take out tourists and other visitors are checked by police and the navy to assess their safety levels and to ensure that they are sea worthy.

Most of the people who will take you out on a boat in the Algarve are very experienced captains with many previously working as fishermen in the local area and knowing the sea and the currents well.
