The Golden Gate Twin Sister In Portugal

"Golden Gate Twin Sister In Portugal"As soon as you see the bridge of Ponte 25 de Abril, you will automatically think of another world famous bridge; San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, and there is a very good reason for that; the architect of the Golden Gate Bridget of San Francisco also designed the Ponte 25 de Abril.

Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge that connects Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, to the Setubal Peninsula at the left bank of Tagus river. The bridge was inaugurated on august 6, 1966. Later, in the year 1999, a train platform was added to this bridge. If you are visiting Portugal, this bridge is certainly something that should be on your ‘must see’ list. Often, this bridge is compared to the Golden Gate Bridge because of the similarities and the workmanship; in fact, it is often called the Golden Gate’s twin sister.

25 de Abril Bridge is the 20th largest suspension bridge in the entire world. The top most platform of the bridge has six car lanes and the lower platform has two tracks for trains. The bridge was first known as the Salazar Bridge, which is after the name of dictator Salazar. But the name was later changed to 25 de Abril Bridge, after the ‘Carnation Revolution’ in April 25, 1974. The Carnation Revolution was a unique type of revolution, as there was no bloodshed during this revolution; in fact, the Carnation Revolution is also known as the “bloodless revolution.” In this revolution, the soldiers placed carnation flowers in the muzzles of their rifles and revolted.

Standing on this bridge looking in any direction, the sights are mind-blowing and spectacular. The foundation of this bridge holds a world record, as it goes 262 ft underneath the riverbed. 25 de Abril Bridge is usually busy during the weekends, but during the weekdays, it is extremely busy.
