Places To Visit – Ferragudo

"ferragudo algarve"Anyone looking to find a slice of the real Algarve without having to travel into the hills should consider a visit to the beautiful little fishing village of Ferragudo.

Located in the central Algarve region between Portimão and Carvoeiro, Ferragudo has become a favourite spot not only for visitors to the Algarve keen to soak up the local atmosphere and to explore the local beaches but it is also hugely popular with those looking for their own perfect home in the sun.

Getting to Ferragudo is simple.  Drive along the En125 and then exit when you see it signposted.  The roads to Ferragudo itself are not the best and if you are coming from the direction of Carvoeiro then you need to take care as there are some very sharp bends along the road that you need to slow down for.

When you arrive in Ferragudo there is some parking available in the centre near to the river and the square but if you do not fancy fighting for a space in the peak months then get a taxi to the village or hop on the tourist “train” that leaves from Carvoeiro and goes to Ferragudo once a week on a Tuesday – a unique and fun way to get to the village with no need to drive.

When in Ferragudo most people head straight for the quaint square in the centre where you will find numerous bars, restaurants and cafes spilling out on to the street and in the evenings you can find live music and entertainment.

All around the square a beautiful cobbled little streets to explore, providing amazing photo opportunities and a chance to meet the local people who will be more than happy to lend a hand if you find yourself lost in the maze of these little streets.

Children will love the park in the centre of the town with a little bridge to get to it but for many people it is the fish restaurants along the river front that leads to the sea that are a big draw.  Dine in the open air and watch the locals cook freshly caught fish on huge barbecues among the lobster pots and then take a walk around the corner to the fantastic beaches of Ferragudo that then leads on to Praia Grande.

Ferragudo ticks all the boxes for anyone looking for an authentic Portuguese experience with great food, beaches, entertainment and a wonderful atmosphere.  Visit in the summer to soak up the sun or during the winter, especially around Christmas time when the annual fair takes place along the waterfront.
