Places To Visit In The Algarve – Monchique

"places to visit algarve monchique"There is so much more to the Algarve than just beaches and golf courses, if you hop into a car then it is only a short drive into the lush countryside of the Algrave and the mountains of Monchique are a perfect example of how diverse the Algarve is.

Monchique is the name of the town which is located on the mountain that you can see from much of the Algarve and when people talk about going to the mountains they usually say that they are going to Monchique.

The trip up the mountain is as much fun as getting to the top itself, just be aware that the road can get very busy in the summer and that in some places you need to be very careful as the bends can be sharp when driving along these roads in the Algarve!

Foia is the name of the place on the very top of the mountain and this is the highest point in the Algarve making it an ideal place for some photo opportunities.

On a clear day you can see almost the entire region and easily all the way to the coast from Foia and you should be able to see some of the more obvious landmarks from here to then work out where other places are along the Algarve coast.

Foia can get very busy with many bus trips stopping off here and there is only a small shop and cafe area so it is best to just see the sights at the summit and then make your way down the mountain to one of the many cafes or restaurants on the roadside.  You will find you get better service as there are fewer people and most places also have amazing views to enjoy.

After looking at the views it is worth spending some time in Monchique town itself which is well sign posted along the road up and down the mountain and has a large underground car park in the centre which makes parking very easy.

The quaint cobbled streets of the town lead to traditional shops selling everything from homemade sweets to honey and the renowned local liqueur of “medronho”.  This is a VERY strong alcoholic drink which is clear in colour or can sometimes have a golden tone and is made from the berries of a bush similar to the strawberry.  However there is not even a slight hint of strawberry taste to this and for many people one glass is enough, although it is good to drink after a heavy meal to help digestion!

Monchique hosts several fairs and festivals throughout the year, including the popular sausage festival, find out more about local events from the Algarve tourism board or from the Monchique local council.
