Places To Visit in The Algarve – Silves

"places to visit silves algarve"When you are travelling around the Algarve you may focus on the coastal region, beaches and golf courses but the Algarve has a rich and varied history with one of the most beautiful examples of a city untouched by time being the inland city of Silves.

Silves is located in the central region of the Algarve between Albufeira and Portimão and is only a short journey inland from the coastal towns of Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra.  It is very easy to find Silves as it is well sign posted from both the Algarve toll motorway of the A22 and from the EN125, the free, but slower, alternative.

Head in the direction of Lagoa and then leave the motorway at this point and then drive into Silves or travel along the En125 and at Lagoa then follow the sign posts for Silves.

When you approach Silves from this direction you will travel through a small tunnel and when you emerge you will be greeted by an amazing view over the river and across towards the imposing castle that dominates the skyline.

Silves is the oldest city in the Algarve and there is history at every point with the castle being the centre for most people to travel to.  Inside the castle walls you can climb up the ramparts for some spectacular views and enjoy a cup of coffee while looking at some of the artifacts they have on show but there are also little museums through the cobbled streets for anyone looking to delve a little deeper into the rich past of this city.

Perhaps the best time to visit Silves has to be during the month of August when the annual Medieval festival takes place.  This is a hugely popular event that has a small entrance fee which then lets you into the centre of the city where you will find live entertainment, the streets filled with stall, food cooked in the traditional ways and you can even hire a costume to get into the swing of things or pay a little extra to go and watch a jousting show.

While Silves is a city it still has beautiful green areas and lots of space for outdoor activities with the recreational ground where the sports centre and swimming pool is located being a popular spot at the weekend.  Take a walk (or run if you are feeling energetic) around the track which follows the river or take the children down to the skate park and mini climbing wall.

Outside Silves there are beautiful Orange groves that you can drive or bike through which offer an alternative view of the Algarve away from the beaches and the hustle and bustle of the coast.
