Silves Medieval Fair Returns For 10th Year

"silves medieval fair"The 10th annual medieval fair of Silves will be returning to the city between August 2 and August 11.

The event, which has been organised by the municipal Câmara in Silves will be see the city transformed and stepping back in time with entertainment, stalls, music and much more over the 10 days of the fair.

This is one of the largest summer events being held in the Algarve this summer and every year thousands of visitors come to the city in the central Algarve for fun for all the family.

While this is essentially a chance for everyone to have a little fun during the fair there is still a historical aspect to the fair with information and reenactments taking place and drawing from the period of the first Christian conquest of the city which took place back in 1189 followed by the Muslim reconquest which took place in 1191.

The mixture of cultures and traditions associated with both the Christians and the Muslims from this period add a real diversity to the fair with elements from both being explored through costume and entertainment.

The fair will be open daily from 6pm until 1am during the week and from 6pm until 2am on the Friday and Saturday nights.

The event is open to everyone with each person needing to buy a bracelet to enter costing three euros per person if bought before the fair and costing four euros if you buy it on the day.

This is a fantastic event for the entire family and every day there will be the chance to watch a live jousting show (at an extra cost) while inside the city walls you can see live music acts and entertainment including dance shows.

For any visitors who want to get into the spirit of the event there is the opportunity to swap your clothes for the evening for those of a period costume so you can mingle in with the rest of the crowds, the hay bales and the colourful entertainment.

Every year during the summer the Algarve plays host to many live events from medieval fairs to live concerts, sporting competitions and much more.  For further information about Algarve events visit your local tourist information office in teh Algarve where copies of the events brochure for the month are available to pick up for free.
