Top 5 Algarve Beaches

"algarve beaches"The beaches of the Algarve are some of the most beautiful in the world and while they are a great place to spend long summer days, they are also a wonderful place to visit during the quieter winter months for walks.

The Algarve has a hugely diverse range of beaches and because of this there should be one to suit everyone!  From long golden stretches to small, intimate coves and everything in between – for a perfect beach experience the Algarve really has it all.

1. Praia da Marinha – Voted as one of the best beaches in all of the world Praia da Marinha (pictured) has view to die for and if you visit this beach be sure to take your camera with you to capture the amazing rock formations and crystal clear waters.  Be prepared for a bit of a hike here though as there are a lot of steps down (not so much or a problem) but they do feel difficult coming back up again.  There is a beach bar at the bottom here for refreshments and this is a great place to spend all day.

2. Praia da Rocha – Miles of gorgeous golden sands, easy to find and plenty of space make this one of the most popular beaches in all of the region.  In the summer thousands head here each day but it is so big you will still find plenty of space to put your towel.

3. Barril - This is one that has to be seen to be believed, the beach near Tavira is famed for being the anchor graveyard with hundreds of anchors poking out of the sand making for an unbelievable site at any time of the year and well worth the trip to.  Away from the anchors this is a gorgeous beach with lovely calm and surprisingly warm waters.

4. Carrapateira - This is one for all the surfers out there with waves up to 25 feet having been recorded at the beach – especially in the winter months.  An impressive beach by any standards but best not to get into the water unless you are prepared for the waves.

5. Caneiros – This beach is not only beautiful it also has one of the most famous beach restaurants in the whole of the Algarve on it – the Rei das Praias beach restaurant.  This place used to be a traditional beach restaurant but it has gone very much up market in recent years thanks to famous patrons such as José Marinho frequenting.  The beach restaurant also provides the sun beds and loungers and there are very luxurious facilities here.  If you would rather rough it though you can still buy an ice cream and sit on your towel on the beach or take a dip in the calm waters and swim out to the impressive outcrop in the sea.

Whatever type of beach you are looking for at any time of the year you are sure to find your dream beach in the Algarve!
